SOTD---January 2025 Review

I asked some of my friends to add one song to a playlist everyday. Here are my thoughts after a month.

This blog post is a little different than my other ones. I promise I am writing and living more fun stories day by day, but I also wanted to write about this side project going on.

I often asked my friends for song recs bc I always felt like my music taste was getting boring, old, and stale. Instead of asking people and wanting diverse results, I wanted to make it easier for them and myself.

So a little less than a month ago, I started a playlist called SOTD (song of the day). I sent it to a bunch of friends throughout school, debate, and the desi community and there was one condition. Add one song from any artist any genre and any language to the playlist. Just add one.

While no one has actually added exactly one song everyday, so far the playlist has amassed 340 songs and counting. I’m bored rn so I’m gonna listen right now and drop my ratings for all of them on a scale of 1/10. I’ll also include my favorite 20ish second snippet.

These rankings will be subjective. Half the people I know think my music taste sucks and half the people think it’s beautiful. I can’t promise you’ll like my song, but I am promising honestly. If you want to join the playlist here’s the link

Before I start rating songs, I’ll add some fun stats.

   hella soothing, but pretty repetitive. Def something I’d come back too often when I’m in my feels. Favorite snippet (0:00-0:55). 9

5. A Nonsense Christmas - Sabrina Carpenter - Panav

   Ur a cornball panav. Not really my thing. Would never find myself listening to this alone, especially since I don’t celebrate. Favorite Snippet (lowk none bro every snippet has one weird ass lyric that throws me off). 2

   Nice R. I’ve really liked this song for a while. Favorite Snippet (0:28-1:10). 9

   I’m a pretty big peggy fan so seeing this added was pretty cool bc he’s relatively unknown, and idk how gautam turtle ass kno this. This is his most famous song on this album, and while I rly like it, I think some of the others are better. Favorite Snippet (1:50-2:20). 8
   

8. Famous - Nate Sib - Nate

   I kinda like this song, but prob wouldn’t add it to my playlist. Lyrics are aight. It do be soothing tho. Madden line is cheeky. Favorite snippet (0:05-0:30). 7
   

9. Latitude Remix - Nujabes (Feat. Five Deez) - Leo

   I like the instrumental. Honestly, in general this song is solid. Has a little MF Doom to it. How’d u find this Leo?. The little disc scratching gets annoying at times tho. Favorite Snippet (1:37-1:57) 8

10. Drew Barrymore - SZA - Iman

    This is a good bedtime song. I like the instrumental, SZA’s voice, and the flow. The lyrics aren’t the most relatable cuz it’s about being like women enough which I’m not sure what to do with, but it’s calm. Favorite Snippet (0:00-0:20). 8

11. Hoopti - Smino - Flannery

    I was p excited to listen to this song bc I’ve recently explored Smino’s catalog and I enjoyed what I came across. This song was no different. It’s more upbeat than most of what I’ve heard by him and he does it well. Favorite Snippet (0:57-1:15). 9

12. Role Model - Brent Faiyaz - Aazish

    I have mixed feelings about Brent Faiyaz bc sometimes I just find his stuff boring and built for white girls (nothing wrong w yall, some of yall jus be hella basic not on no hating shit i’m js saying), but I like this song. That’s kinda all I gotta say. Favorite Snippet (0:00-0:08) 7

13. 66 - Lil Yachty (Feat. Trippie Redd) - Herny

Woulda never expected Trippie on the playlist this early, but thankfully this is one of his good features. I miss when he used to this to his voice. Favorite snippet (0:27-1:11). 8.5

Sci-Fi ass beat. Solid song, most of MAVI stuff is neat, he’ll be bigger one day. Whoever had the verse at 1:26 locked in. Favorite Snippet (1:26-1:54). 7

15. Luther - Kendrick Lamar (Feat. SZA) - Louis

    I might piss off a lot of people, but I think Kendrick is hella overrated. Like, personally his voice is p annoying after a while. I get he’s this lyrical beast or whatever, but idt his lyrics are better than Peggy, Joey, Saba or Denzel. Calling Drake a pedo is not some revolutionary lyricism. With that being said, I kinda like this song bc SZA bailed Kendrick’s ass out. Favorite Snippet (1:09-1:20). 6.5

16. Chameleon - RUBII - Carson

    I usually hate british artists, but this song is class. favorite Snippet (Girls verse). 7.5

17. Samurai - Lupe Fiasco - Raahim

    Easily going in my playlist. I really really like this song. Favorite Snippet (1:21-1:40). Only small flaw is that it’s one verse too long. Good shit raahim 9.5

good j a bit overplayed. Favorite Snippet (2:03-2:14). 7.5

19. NIGHTS LIKE THIS - The Kid LAROI - Suley

    I’ve heard this hella times from all the sports edits and I like this song, j wish it was longer. Beat is ethereal. Favorite Snippet (0:00-0:39). 8

    There’s no way this isn’t Kanye. Okay, I just checked, he’s on this track, I was trippin for a sec. Solid song. Favorite Snippet (0:35-0:56). 6

    I might be tripping but the start of this song is really trippy. Oh nvm I’ve heard this before. My sister likes this song. This is peak white ppl music right here. Favorite Snippet (2:30-2:52). 7

Going in my bedtime playlist. That’s not a diss. DAMN I was not expecting Don to come in like that. Yeah it’s nice. I feel like I’m not being harsh enough, but these songs are good so far. Favorite Snippet (1:30-2:12). 7.5

29. Crack Rock - Frank Ocean - Roshan

    Frank Ocean is another one of those artists that’s in the same basket as Brent. Like we get that you listen to RNB non traditional rap to impress girls bro, admit it. Ur basic. Ain’t nothing wrong wit it ur just basic. The lil “Crack Rock, Crack Rock repetition be pissing me off.
    
    Update: This song is different tho. After careful consideration, I have realized that on my first listen to Crack Rock by Frank Ocean, I didn’t properly recognize the sonic and lyrical choices that make this song stand out in Ocean’s discography. The electric piano used at the beginning of the song lulls the listener into an almost infant-like state of comfort. This comfort is quickly disrupted as a live drum kit drives the song into a more upbeat pace—a pace that will not slow for the remainder of the song. The electric piano remains audible, yet it acts only in short bursts as a complement to the fast, reverberating drum kit, which surrounds the listener in an inescapable soundscape that borders on overwhelming.

    The drums act as the driving force of the song, and even when Ocean’s vocals come in, attention cannot be fully diverted from the kicks and snares. This dichotomy between melody and percussion serves as an analogy for the subject matter of the song: Ocean is unable to exist within the song without the presence of the drum kit, much like a crack addict is unable to exist without crack.

    The lyrics themselves tell a heartbreaking story of a man who has seen the best years of his life pass him by while obsessing over the aforementioned drug. In my opinion, the story is more about the existential crisis many drug addicts experience than it is about the broad idea of being a drug addict. For this reason, my statement, “Ain’t it funny is a much better song abt addiction,” misses the entire point of the song. Ocean doesn’t seek to tell the story of a sad drug addict; he looks to explore an addict’s existentialism. In my opinion, this goal is accomplished decently while also creating a catchy, memorable track. If it were up to me, this song would be a 7.5 (though hopefully not played at my funeral).

    After watching Atlanta, I’ll never treat Donald Glover the same. Why is this song so short. Nuking it just for that, but I actually like it. Favorite Snippet (0:00-0:42). 5.5

32. Sistanem - JID - Nina

I’ve listened to this album a few times and this song never blew my mind. Like, it’s solid, better than I guessed it would be and it’s better than Bruddanem, but it’s wayyy too long so idt I’d play it often. The jinglebell at holidays was a cute touch so I’ll boost it .5 for that. Favorite Snippet (the whole ending). 8

    Too upbeat. Ain’t shit to be happy abt rn. Also what kinda name is The La’s. Favorite Snippet (0:00-0:20) 3

34. NEVEREVER - Destroy Lonely - Ahsan

    He sounds like a matured lil uzi. His beats are similar. I like this more than the last Destroy Lonely song. Favorite Snippet (0:40-1:11). 7

    When a good thing goes bad it’s not the end of the world. Sorry Leo sorry, you’ll get over it ik u will. If ur even reading this. Jordan Love will make u happy again I promise. Favorite Snippet (The beginning) 8

    This song sucks. 1.5

41. What Once Was - Iman

    I have a feeling this is something my sister would like a lot. The beat goes dummy. Rest is decent. Added to bedtime playlist. Favorite Snippet (2:15-3:05) 8

    Another good song that’s been overplayed. Favorite Snippet - Carti’s verse. 8

43. Fight the Feeling - Mac Miller (feat. Kendrick Lamar and Iman Omari) - Rakesh

    Freshman year classic. This song is a prime example of why not having premium sucks. This is a great song up until 4:31. This is the reason this song will never make it to Bilal’s Aux. Favorite Snippet (0:40-1:16). 7.5

    This song never been my favorite. 2nd half is a lot better. Favorite Snippet (3:16-3:39) 4.5

    Does Brent make music about anything except for Love? Genuinely curious. Anyways same critic as Gunna. J kinda sounds like everything else. Coco cooked. Fav snippet (1:17-1:50). 7

    Travis verse is rly good and Drake did his thing. Carry on. Fav snippet - Travis verse. 8.5

    I might have to dibble dabble in some old Drake. This is good, not great, but good. Favorite Snippet (1:51-2:24). 7

    Please don’t waste this beat Destroy Lonely. Please. Favorite Snippet (0:00-0:47). Alright yeah he locked in. Uzi was better, but still a good song. Rayaan ur obsessed bro. 8

    Idk what’s crazier. The fact that White ass Henry added another Spanish song or that i’ve heard this before. Whoever has the raspy voice kinda kills this song, but without him I like it. Favorite Snippet (without raspy dude). 5.5
